When flying an airplane was no more than a reckless act, Amelia Earhart was the first woman to fly cross the Atlantic and the Pacific alone. Besides her exploits as a pilot, she wrote three books and many articles reporting on her trips, and become one of the primary promoters of aviation. Her last adventure was to fly around the world.
