Esta obra explica los procesos esenciales que han dado forma a la trayectoria histórica de Chile, acogiendo lo que la historiografía corrientemente ha estudiado y difundido como historia nacional, pero también ofreciendo interpretaciones que complementan, y en ocasiones cuestionan, las nociones más arraigadas sobre la historia de esta realidad natural y social nombrada Chile desde épocas inmemoriales. De este modo se asume que no existe una sola historia de Chile y que la heterogeneidad también es propia de esta comunidad.

La historiografía oficial ha dedicado escaso eco a las personas que ostentaron la titularidad de la dinastía carlista, la otra dinastía, desde su emerger en 1833 hasta nuestros días. Estos ocho monarcas se enfrentaron al poder constituido de turno, unas veces con las armas en la mano y otras con la comparecencia electoral. Las cuatro guerras civiles en que intervinieron se saldaron, de una forma u otra, con sendas derrotas. Pero en la lucha electoral obtuvieron ciertos éxitos, que asustaron a los dictadores de turno.
