La presente obra es el resultado de una investigación sobre las diversas concepciones de los pueblos del México precortesiano en relación con las mariposas, a las que atribuían características míticas y religiosas. El estudio se inicia en los códices, explora las minuciosas referencias del padre Sahagún, indaga en los estudios históricos de los siglos posteriores a la Colonia y se documenta, finalmente, en los trabajos de antropología y arqueología más recientes.
