La historia de Sonora es la historia de una periferia, de una frontera y de un corredor. el actual espacio que cubre la entidad federativa estuvo ubicado en la periferia de Mesoamérica, se volvió frontera de guerra durante la Colonia y hasta 1880, cuando cesaron los ataques de apaches, hasta 1938 incluso, cuando el presidente Lázaro Cárdenas estableció un acuerdo de paz con los yaquis; ha sido también una especie de corredor por ser una región de migrantes, capitales y productos al tratarse de una de las regiones agrícolas, comercial y exportadora más importante de México.
