Sinopsis del Libro

El Mayflower es un barco que ha llegado a ser célebre en la historia de los Estados Unidos porque en 1620 transportó desde Inglaterra al grupo conocido como "los peregrinos", quienes serían los primeros colonos europeos en establecerse en Norteamérica. Ellos zarparon desde el puerto inglés de Southampton y bautizaron como Nueva Inglaterra a la tierra que los acogió. Como señala este libro, el Pacto del Mayflower designa el acuerdo que los hombres adultos de esta comunidad firmaron a bordo del barco para fijar criterios generales que sirvieran como fundamento para el gobierno de la sociedad que estaban fundando en América. El propósito era que sirviera como base para crear leyes justas e inspiradas en el bienestar general. Este acuerdo fue el cimiento de la naciente colonia de Plymouth durante una década y los futuros gobiernos de la colonia siempre se basaron en sus postulados.
