En este libro se estudia la manera en la que el arquitecto configura la estructura. La relación entre la estructura y lo que la envuelve. Cómo la estructura se manifiesta en la arquitectura. Cuándo y por qué la estructura se oculta. Cuándo y por qué la estructura se emplea como efecto ilusorio, bien de la gravedad, bien del espacio. Pero sobre todo querríamos comprobar que la estructura es algo más que un sustentar. Y lo haremos mediante el estudio de estructuras históricas como el Partenón, la Sainte Chapelle, el Panteón, el Palacio de Carlos V, la Catedral de San Pablo, la Alhambra y Santa Sofía. Y también mediante el estudio monográfico de la obra de Mies van der Rohe, uno de los grandes maestros de la arquitectura del siglo XX.
