Es bien conocido el importante papel que desempeñaron Daniel Cosío Villegas y Alfonso Reyes en la tarea de prestar ayuda a los intelectuales españoles que se encontraban desamparados a raíz de la guerra civil que devastó su país entre 1936 y 1939. La expresión más evidente de esta ayuda fue La Casa de España en México, una institución creada por el general Lázaro Cárdenas en julio de 1938 y de la que Cosío y Reyes fueron los principales impulsores.
