Este libro cuenta la historia de un mundo en transformación y de una sociedad, la peruana, que ansiaba una vida mejor. Aunque compartido, este anhelo tenía significados distintos para los diferentes secrores de la heterogénea sociedad colonial. De ahí que las luchas por la independencia peruana fueran al mismo tiempo una guerra civil y una guerra internacional, una guerra de poder y una guerra de ideas, que involucró a todos los estamentos en pos de sus propios intereses y sueños.

En el presente libro, el autor utiliza los restos arqueológicos y los textos antiguos para explorar la historia de Mesopotamia, desde los tiempos prehistóricos hasta la ascensión de Babilonia, a comienzos del segundo milenio a.C. En su relato, documentado con ilustraciones procedentes de las amplias colecciones del British Museum, se refleja el dramático flujo y reflujo del destino de sumerios, acadios y otros habitantes de la región mesopotámica, esbozando las historias de cada uno de ellos y reuniéndolas en un todo coherente.
