Mujeres (in)visibles

Sinopsis del Libro

Libro Mujeres (in)visibles

Fiscal capitalism and the dismantling of citizenship in Puno, Peru

Libro Fiscal capitalism and the dismantling of citizenship in Puno, Peru

This excellent history of Peru proposes and proves an entirely new thesis on its nineteenth century: the changes in its economy that might have led to a better future were undone by taxes and other demands at the national, provincial and local levels. The failure of Peru owes a good deal to wartime taxes and local tax farming of the countryside. Professor Christine Hunefeldt does for the mundane issue of taxation what she has already done for Peruvian slavery and women’s rights; she writes a new history based on the evolution of a tax structure that changed for the worse over time. This is...

Mexican Folk Narrative from the Los Angeles Area

Libro Mexican Folk Narrative from the Los Angeles Area

Urban Los Angeles is the setting in which Elaine Miller has collected her narratives from Mexican-Americans. The Mexican folk tradition, varied and richly expressive of the inner life not only of a people but also of the individual as each lives it and personalizes it, is abundantly present in the United States. Since it is in the urban centers that most Mexican-Americans have lived, this collection represents an important contribution to the study of that tradition and to the study of the changes urban life effects on traditional folklore. The collection includes sixty-two legendary...

Estupidocracia

Libro Estupidocracia

You can confront a stupid individual or a group of stupid people identified as such, but when the way people live and the way they are governed are possessed by stupidity, it seems impossible to reverse the situation. So how do we fight something that drags us down? You can fight fascism, communism, and many «isms» but can you fight stupidity when it is systemic and you yourself are part of the problem and justify totally absurd things? To try to answer these questions, the author ironizes about the misinterpreted welfare state and a single thought that surrounds us more and more.
