The experiences in prison of female prisoners in Franco’s time was known mostly through the accounts of the prisoners themselves. This book, based on rigorous research, studies the main prisons for women (Ventas, Les Corts, Saturrarán, Segovia, etc) and reconstructs the movements that imprisioned women had to undergo all over Spain from one prison to another during the Civil War and the postwar period, pointing out the specific connotations of each prison, the main events that took place in some of them, the profile of the prisoners, the kinds of crimes with which they were charged and, in short, the inside story of a great and terrible History which was dramatic in the case of the children imprisioned with their mothers for the fact of being the sons and daughters of prisoners. The book also shows the parallel evolution of the Francoist prison sistem and how the female prisoners acquired a prison conscience or culture and were able to build in such averse circunstance some mechanisms of resistence and solidarity. It also shows the special connotations of the repression of the Franco regime towards women who were being doubly punished for being «reds» and for being women.

Cerro Gordo

Libro Cerro Gordo

High in the Inyo Mountains, between Owens Valley and Death Valley National Park, lies the ghost town of Cerro Gordo. Discovered in 1865, this silver town boomed to a population of 3,000 people in the hands of savvy entrepreneurs during the 1870s. As the silver played out and the town faded, a few hung on to the dream. By the early 1900s, Louis D. Gordon wandered up the Yellow Grade Road where freight wagons once traversed with silver and supplies and took a closer look at the zinc ore that had been tossed aside by early miners. The Fat Hill lived again, primarily as a small company town. By...
