Francisco Cervantes de Salazar escribió su Crónica de la Nueva España por encargo del rey Felipe II. Esta obra destaca por sus datos sobre las culturas indígenas autóctonas, de gran valor antropológico, y por la visión que ofrece sobre la conquista y la gesta de Hernán Cortés. Además de su cercanía con la cultura mexicana, Cervantes de Salazar tuvo como referencias para este libro las Cartas de relación, del propio Cortés, y la Crónica de Francisco López de Gómara.
