El libro es un análisis comparativo ente literatura -Baroja- y realidad histórica -la ciudad de Madrid en el paso del siglo XIX al XX-. Resulta ser por ello un estudio de las condiciones materiales en las que se desarrollaba la vida cotidiana de las capas populares y los grupos marginados de la ciudad en esas décadas.

Un recorrido que profundiza en la primera historia del NuevoMundo: los pueblos originarios de America; las violentas interacciones entre los colonos y las civilizaciones aborigenes despojadas de su patrimonio; la genesis de una cultura continental mestiza y plural; y el brote de los sentimientos nacionales, preludio de las luchas por la liberacion economica y la independencia poltica.
