La villa de Zafra de los siglos XVI y XVII en nada se asemeja a ese páramo cultural con el que se suele identificar al espacio extremeño. En su trama urbana ejercen el arte de la educación maestros y preceptores, suministran su preciosa mercancía avezados libreros, surgen bibliotecas que atesoran volúmenes, vecinos que leen y se regocijan con las representaciones teatrales. Unos y otros son el objeto de este estudio, sin dejar al margen los avatares históricos de la localidad.

La intención de Weckmann en este material es aclarar el concepto erróneo de que Brasil surgió ya en plena Edad Moderna, ya que al hacer una acuciosa investigación sobre la herencia medieval de México, no concibe que el Brasil constituya excepción a la tendencia general que apunta en la historia latinoamericana.
