Pedro (Pietro) Cerone nació en Bérgamo en 1566 pero pasó gran parte de su vida en territorios pertenecientes a la corona española, entre ellos Nápoles, en donde fungió el puesto de músico de la Capilla Real. Cerone debe parte de su fama a este tratado de música publicado en 1613, el cual ha servido para establecer las prácticas sobre composición musical existentes en el siglo XVI.
